Approximately 250 volunteers — about two-thirds of them from the Laie Hawaii North Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — helped clean marine debris from Kahuku beach on Saturday morning, August 2. Beach Environmental Awareness Campaign Hawaii (BEACH) organized the activity as part of the Hawaii Conservation Conference and also in celebration of the worldwide 2008 International Year of the Reef. Similar clean-ups occurred at beaches around the state.
Before the clean-up began, State Senator Clayton Hee, whose district includes Kahuku, thanked the volunteers for "keeping our environment clean and safe for everyone to enjoy.
BEACH representatives explained marine debris from the North Pacific Sub-tropical gyre accumulates on windward beaches throughout Hawaii which, along with objectives to educate and bring public awareness, led to the clean-up campaign.
Laie Hawaii North Stake President Finau Hafoka mobilized the Latter-day Saint volunteers, who live in Laie and Kahuku, to help with the project. For more information on the project. Photos by Caryn Kunz:
