Kahuku High Head Coach Reggie Torres shared a few comments with Kaleo before the start of the varsity Red-and-White Scrimmage on June 2: “We look forward to the season. In the off-season we’ve evaluated the whole program and we’re trying to fix some things one step at a time.”
For example, he noted the team has been working on offense this spring, “and then tomorrow I’m going to sit down with our leadership committee — I’ve selected some captains — and we’re going to reevaluate our expectations in the Fall, and ways to get better so we don’t repeat what happened last year.”
Asked about the depth of positions, Torres replied, “We’re deep in the skilled positions, but we’re really young at the line on offense and defense. That’s where we’re building right now.”
“For example, I’ve got three guys at quarterback — Tima Tapusoa [pictured above, handing off], J.J. Kubota and Sage Kaka — and anyone of them can be a starter.”
“We moved Jray Galea‘i to DB safety so we can make more use of his talents. We want to get him more on the field and on special teams. We might even use him on offense as a receiver.”
Torres said he’s also “expecting a lot” from St. John Lessary at tailback; and on defense we have Aulola Tonga, Kamalani Alo, Justin Afalava, Irwin Ah Hoy — we’re expecting them to have a great year, but it’s going to be a process.”
“I’m looking forward to a new start,” he said, also asking the fans to “please support us.”
