Parking was especially tight around the Naniloa Loop traffic circle in Laie near Hukilau Beach on Memorial Day morning, May 26, as approximately 40 extended Mapu - Ah You - Reid - etc. family members and friends cooked, prepared and sold almost 600 plate lunches as a fundraising benefit for Daniel T. Mapu. The proceeds and additional donations will be used to send Mapu to visit a brain specialist in Utah in June.

Mapu is the son of Simi and Maryann Mapu, formerly of Laie and now living in Hauula. He is also a 1999 Kahuku High graduate and All-Star football player and a Polynesian Cultural Center performer. Soon after serving as a Spanish-speaking Mormon missionary in Chicago, Mapu resumed his job at the PCC and was participating in an anti-drug sign-waving activity when he was struck by a two vehicles in Kaaawa almost five years ago and critically injured. The accident left him paralyzed and unable to speak, with only partial use of his left arm; but a family member said he's now able to communicate somewhat with a type of sign language.
The almost 600 friends and neighbors who stopped in front of Aunty Tau Moea'i's house had a choice among six entrees, including laulau, fish or fish stew, roast pork, bento and barbecue chicken, with sides of poke, Tahitian po'e or Samoan puligi — in short, the food was very ono.
