Many people were not even aware that Honolulu Fire Department responders fought a large brush fire mauka of Laie for several hours on Memorial Day afternoon, May 26, an effort made more dramatic by the skills of the HFD helicopter which made repeated passes to drop huge buckets of water on the blaze [see photo below].

Leonard Peters, who oversees security for Hawaii Reserves, Inc., which manages the mauka conservation lands in Laie, said the fire started at approximately 2 p.m. on Memorial Day, near the trail head that takes off from the end of Poohaili Street. He also said hikers may have caused the blaze.
HFD set up a large, portable "pool" in the "cricket field" area of Laie and pumped it full of water, which the helicopter then used to replenish the large container. To see the maneuver was quite impressive, especially as the pilot "threaded" the heavily-laden bucket through a number of trees before returning to the fire site. Three hours later the helicopter was still making passes.

All you have to do is watch a few TV programs to see how vulnerable helicopter pilots are doing risky maneuvers like this to put out forest fires.
All hikers in the area should know that all campfires and cigarettes need to be extinguished thoroughly otherwise the consequences can be a threat to people and property.
Mahalo to our fire department for a job well done.
Actually,I and my friend were hiking on the mountain that day.First of all,we just saw a little fire and wondered whether the fire was made by man or not. After then, we went down from the Mt, and there’s a cop asking us the way leading to the fire place.Wow,I couldn’t believe that that fire seriously became bigger and bigger. The fire was considered present for the Memorial Day…
