Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackAfter being away for nearly 20 years, I was excited to attend a Kahuku May Day which I quickly learned was at night, than at 10 at night. Okay, no problem. When I arrived at PCC, the entrance fee was a surprise but fortunately my nephew had a ticket waiting for me. Although the festivities started a little late, it was nice to see familiar faces and the captivating and well performed number by the Maori group. As I observed some the introduction of the court, I was impressed. I am a little disappointed that the queen was not Hawaiian as May Day is a Hawaiian tradition and we are after all IN Hawaii. The king was the best that I’ve seen even from years ago. The talent of this young man seemed to tell me that there is more to him. The dances of the court, of the Tahitian group and even of the Fijian group were entertaining. Then came the beginning of the chaos. I myself am Hawaiian/Samoan but I was embarrased by the display from parents, friends, and even several court members as they ran onto the stage slapping money onto the performers. My seat was only a couple rows up from the king’s family and not once, not twice but at least six times, someone almost fell on the king’s grandmother and they were rudely blocking the view of both king and queen’s family. Yes, we have traditions. Yet let us not forget that being a proud people, we need to exhibit our pride through consideration and showing a little “class”.
At the end, there was no closing just an abrupt ending. I feel for those that worked so hard to prepare for this special night only to have it end in such a manner. Please, I would appreciate it greatly if your paper would do an article on the May Night 2008 and address this to prevent a repeat of it next year. Also, are there no pictures of that night? Thank you for your time.
Slightly Disappointed
