As part of their participation in World Kindness Week in November 2006, the children and families of Kahuku Elementary School decided to have a "penny drive" to benefit Kahuku Hospital — now called Kahuku Medical Center, and so jars to collect pennies were placed in the classrooms and office.

They collected enough money for the school to purchase and donate needed supplies to the Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy departments at the hospital on April 2.

Gerry Nihipali, Physical Therapist at Kahuku Medical Center, responded: "This is wonderful — to know that pennies collected can really add up. It felt like Christmas to receive those gifts fromthe school. We hope that this is the beginning of our communities to help in any way possible."
