Kahuku High and Intermediate School alumni and current students both have a lot to be proud of:
Kahuku High has been ranked by the "U.S. News and World Report" magazine in the top 1,000 public high schools in the entire United States. Out of tens of thousands of public high schools in America, being in the top 1,000 is quite an accomplishment.
"U.S. News and World Report" traditionally ranks colleges and universities. But for the first time they ranked high schools based on their performance on state assessments, disadvantaged students, and student participation and achievement in the Advanced Placement Program.
Based on certain qualifications, Kahuku is awarded the Bronze Medal.
Although Kahuku High is not known for its great campus or having the most resources, we have had great successes in athletics and academics. As you consider all of Kahuku's accomplishments and great teaching staff it comes as no surprise that Kahuku was named one of the best public high schools in the nation.
Recently Kahuku High students have been rewarded for their accomplishments in art and photography at the Scholastic Art competition:
Junior Patricia Correa won a gold key in 2D computer art, and junior Troy Pinterelli won a gold key and silver key in photography digital imaging. These gold keys mean that both Pinterelli and Correa are eligible to compete in the prestigious national competition.
Junior Ghialana Borges won two silver keys for her work in photography digital imaging and 2D art. Junior Shyun Ueno won a silver key in the same category.
The Speech and Debate Team competed in mid-January at the Neighbor Island Tournament at Maui Community College. This is the first qualifying tournament of the season and two Kahuku students won first place:
Junior Sarah Ungureit and sophomore Alex Chowen took first in Varsity Policy. Senior Tiffany Polk also placed first for her performance in the humorous interpretation category.
Even more exciting for Kahuku is that a team of five students from the speech and debate Team have been participating in a national contest to win $10,000 in scholarships and a free trip to New York.
Over the past several months they have progressed to the top-eight teams with the help of Mrs. Winnie Graham and Mrs. Amy Swiderski. They continue to work hard to continue to be number one!
Kahuku continues to improve the education that each student receives. With great teachers and leaders, Kahuku has continually improved on State assessments.
Overall students at Kahuku have earned more than 25 national academic awards each year for National History Day, the Scholastic Art Competition, speech and debate, and We the People.
As the years continue we will follow the path of successes that graduates of Kahuku have left for us. We expect great things from Kahuku in water polo, History Day, football, We the People, and any other events we choose to endeavor.
